Xavier, either you move this pile of books from where they are, or they will tragically find themselves knocked into the fire.

Sometimes, it's just... hard to tell. That's why I live out here. At least if I'm away from people, I know who I am.

Why do you let me stay here, then.

You didn't have anywhere else to go. I'm a lot of things, but I'm not cruel. It was the right thing to do.

No, Xavier. That's what you assumed. You never actually asked if I had relatives elsewhere, or if I'd prefer to go back to Orion, or stay in Pavo. Besides, it's been years now. Are you still saying it's charity?

[he's quiet, not looking at him]

[squeezes his shoulders slightly]

As for your own feelings, you have them. You're proud of your knowledge, and possessive of your books. You don't like the practices of Lepus because they feel wrong to you. You crave new information to the point of obsession. You like things to be predictable. And whenever I go away for more than a night, you ask when I'm coming back because you're afraid I won't.

So hold on to them, and it might be easier not to get overwhelmed.

[removes his hands, straightening]

And just skip straight to slamming the door in his face if your brother comes around again.

Now, I'm going to fry this meat before it rots.

[goes back into the kitchen and starts banging pots and knives around.]

[smiles, just listening to his sounds]

[a bit louder than usual because he is feeling kind of indignant. but frying food goes here.]

He is... no, was my brother. But I don't hold any ties to that family anymore.

[more murky feelings]
