[In the kitchen, Noric shouts through the door into the next room.]

Xavier, either you move this pile of books from where they are, or they will tragically find themselves knocked into the fire.

[night's fallen before he returns, his calm, solid presence being felt before the sound of him opening the door registers. then he's dumping bags on the floor, talking loudly from a few rooms away.]

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but they've stopped making that parchment you normally use. You'll have to make do with the stuff from old Ferrus, unless someone else goes into the trade.

[immedialely grabs whatever book is around and pretends to be completely dense, ignoring Noric]

[unfortunately, this is nothing new, so he carries on. he crosses into the room where Xavier is, depositing a stack of parchment onto the table nearby.]

He's hardly worth the amount of trade he demands for it. Possibly someone in Lacerta will make a better deal.

[walks out again into the kitchen, intent on unloading his supplies.]

Thankfully getting a new hammer wasn't such a chore.

[looks up, feigning a smile]

Well, that's something at least.

I'm still not sure how the old one managed to ruin itself, metal isn't supposed to bend that easily.

[comes back into the room.]

I got a decent amount of lizard meat, so how do you want it cooked?

...are you so bored you're trying to read upside down, now?

[he flushes darkly, immediately dropping the book]

[comes over and picks the book up from where it fell.]

[flipping through it, idly]

A bad pretense.

Lying is harder than it seems, apparently.

[sits down opposite him. and waits.]

[sighs, running a hand through his hair]

My brother came to visit.

[raises his eyebrows]

I didn't know you had one.

And I was hoping to keep it that way. He's younger than me, by a few years.

Ah.

I hear his parents are very proud of him.

[odd turn of phrase...]

What was he visiting for?

Information, what else? He gave himself away though. Another human experiment.

[a sting of ugly surprise]

Your brother experiments on people?

This is Lepus, Noric. I can assure you, everyone does a little human experimentation here.

[his tone is dull, like it's fact]

I'm aware.

[but it's different to hear it about someone related to Xavier.]

[smiles sardonically]

I always said I wasn't much of a Lepus. Cain was, of course.
